── Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT)──

Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy is a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy that emphasizes the role of irrational beliefs in emotional disturbance. REBT posits that emotional suffering is not caused by events themselves, but by rigid, absolutist interpretations of those events.

Core Concepts – Part 1

  • ABC model (Activating event, Belief, Consequence)
  • Irrational vs. rational beliefs
  • Low frustration tolerance

Core Concepts – Part 2

  • Demandingness and catastrophizing
  • Emotional responsibility

Inculcation in Rehabilitation Treatment

Inculcation in Rehabilitation

REBT is integrated into rehabilitation to address emotional dysregulation, impulsivity, and relapse driven by poor distress tolerance. Patients are educated on the ABC model and guided to identify irrational beliefs related to substance use, such as “I can’t tolerate discomfort without drugs” or “Life must be easy for me.” Therapists actively dispute these beliefs and help patients replace them with rational, flexible alternatives. REBT is particularly effective during detoxification and emotional crises when patients experience frustration, anger, guilt, or shame. Over time, patients develop emotional resilience and accountability, reducing relapse vulnerability.

Clinical Utility

REBT is effective for anger management, emotional instability, impulsivity, personality traits, and relapse due to emotional distress.
